Match number 22 of indian premier league 2020 was played on 8/10/2020 between The Kings XI Punjab and The Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dubai International Stadium.
SUNRISERS HYDERABAD INNINGS
Sunrises Hyderabad won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision was taken because if you look at their squad, batting is their strength and historically the pitch does did not offer anything to the bowlers.
Sunrisers Hyderabad sent out David Warner and Jonny Bairstow as the opening pair. They couldn't have asked for a better start. The Kings XI Punjab bowling attack was not that strong and the Sunrisers opening pair of Jonny Bairstow and David Warner made full use of it. Sunrisers Hyderabad reached a total of 100 runs in just 10 overs. It is difficult to stop these two batsmen once they are in full flow. Isn't it?
Well Kings XI Punjab tried to slow the run rate by changing bowlers but nothing seemed to stop the flow of boundaries. At the rate, they were going 220 on the board looked like a high probability. They kept going in the same way and 150 was on the board in 15 overs. They were all set to finish their innings on a high.
Finally, the first breakthrough for Kings XI Punjab. Bishnoi provided it by taking the wicket of David Warner. In the same over Hyderabad lost their second wicket. Bishnoi who was now high on confidence took the wicket of Jonny Bairstow. 2 in 1 over for him. This must have come as a huge relief to Punjab and finally they could look to apply some pressure.
Sunrisers kept losing wickets after that. They went from 150/0 in the 15th over to 173/4 in the 17th over. Phew!. Kane Williamson hit a flurry of boundaries at the end and Hyderabad finished with 201/6 in their 20 overs.
Kings XI Punjab innings
Punjab would have been pleased with the way they managed to stem the flow of runs in the last few overs of the Hyderabad batting . They were surely looking to carry that positivity in their batting. Hyderabad lost Bhuvneshwar Kumar to injury and without him they suffered against Mumbai Indians in their previous outing so Punjab knew they had a chance.
They sent out KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal as the opening two batsmen. Mayank Agarwal was very unlucky to get run out on 9.
Simran Singh was next into bat. KL Rahul has been in good nick this IPL. As long as he was there, Punjab had a high chance of reaching the target of 202.
Next over KL Rahul lost his second partner for the night Simran Singh who went for the big shot but hit it straight to Priyam Garg. Nicholas Pooran replaced Simran.
It was now upto Pooran and KL Rahul to steady Punjab's ship and take them closer to the target. But soon after Rahul was caught by Williamson while trying to go for the big shot. This was a huge blow for Punjab.
Nicolas Pooran continued to keep the scoreboard ticking though. He reached 50 runs in 17 balls, quicker than any other player in this IPL till now. Maxwell tried his level best to complement Pooran but like Mayank Agarwal he too was run out. Nicolas Pooran played well but lost his wicket due to some good bowling by Rashid Khan. Kings XI Punjab were all out for 132 runs.
Result
In the end Sunrisers won the game by 69 runs. The man of the match for this game was Jonny Bairstow for his 97 of 55 balls.
Conclusion
What I enjoyed most about this match is the way the Sunrisers Hyderabad went about their batting. The way Jonny Bairstow and David Warner batted was a treat to watch. The fastest IPL 50 this season made by Nicholas Pooran was also good to watch. It was all-round entertainment in this match. Good batting, good bowling and some good fielding as well.
