IPL 2020 - Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad - Match No. 56

 

Match number 56 of Indian premier league 2020 took place at the Sharjah cricket stadium in UAE.  The two teams were Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.  Mumbai Indians had already qualified for this year's Playoffs courtesy of Chennai Super Kings win over Kolkata Knight Riders on 29.10.2020.  This was an important match for the Sunrisers though as if they won today they would join Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore  and Delhi Capitals in the Playoffs.

Mumbai Indians Innings


Mumbai Indians started their innings with Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock as the opening two batsmen.  The first over of the day was bowled by Sandeep Sharma.  Mumbai Indians lost their first wicket in the 3rd over which was bowled by Sandeep Sharma.  He bowled a full length ball.  Rohit Sharma tried to loft it over midd-off but he failed to get a good connection and David Warner took a simple catch.  Suryakumar Yadav was the next batsmen in.  Mumbai Indians were now 12/1.

Mumbai Indians lost their second wicket in the 4th over which was also bowled by Sandeep Sharma.  He bowled a low full toss outside off.  Quinton De Kock went for the drive but the ball took an inside edge and went on to hit the stumps. The bowler was quite fortunate here as the 3 balls which preceded this one went for 16 runs and this one might have crossed the boundary as well if the batsmen middled it.  Mumbai Indians were now 39/2.  Ishan Kishan came to middle to partner Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan stabilized the innings   and by the end of the 11th over Mumbai Indians were 81/2. 

The 12th over was bowled by Shahbaz Nadeem and on the first ball, Mumbai Indians lost their 3rd wicket.  Nadeem bowled a flat  delivery outside off.  The inform Suryakumar Yadav went for the cut shot but missed it.  Wriddhiman Saha who was the wicketkeeper quickly displaced the stumps. Sunrisers Hyderabad went for a review which showed that the batsmen's foot was not completely inside the crease.   Mumbai Indians were now 81/3. Krunal Pandya was the next man in.

In the same over, Mumbai Indians lost their next wicket.  Nadeem bowled another flat delivery this time on middle.  Krunal Pandya who had not yet got off the mark decided to flick it but instead he got a leading edge and Kane Williamson took an easy catch.  Mumbai Indians were now 81/4.  Sourabh Tiwary was the new man in. 

The 13th over was bowled by Rashid Khan.  In the first ball, Mumbai Indians lost their 5th wicket.  Rashid Khan bowled a googly. Sourabh Tiwary failed to read it. He nicked it straight to Wriddhiman Saha who took a good catch.  Mumbai Indians were now 87/5  at the end of this over and were now losing wickets in quick succession.  Keiron Pollard was the new man in. 


The 17th over was bowled by Sandeep Sharma. In the third ball Mumbai Indians lost their 6th wicket.  Sandeep Sharma bowled a full toss outside off.  Ishan Kishan who was looking to go for the drive came down the track but he misjudged his shot and the ball went on to hit the stumps.  Mumbai Indians were now 116/6 at the end of the over.

The 18th over was bowled by Jason Holder.  In the second ball, he bowled a full-length delivery.  Nathan Coulter Nile went for the drive but didn't get any elevation on it and Priyam Garg took a good catch at extra cover.  Mumbai Indians were now 116/7.  James Pattinson was the next batsmen in.

The 19th over was bowled by T Natarajan.  It was a good over for the Mumbai Indians as they scored 20 runs off it.  By the end of this over, Mumbai Indians were 139/7.

The last over of the first innings was bowled by Jason Holder. In the third ball he bowled a full toss.  Keiron Pollard went for the big shot but missed it and the ball went on to hit the stumps. Pollard's innings of 41 runs off 25 balls helped the Mumbai Indians reach a score of 145.  Mumbai Indians finished their innings with 149 on the board for a loss of 8 wickets.


Sunrisers Hyderabad Innings


Sunrisers Hyderabad started the chase with Wriddhiman Saha and David Warner.  These two batsmen got their team off to a very good start.  They played some wonderful shots and at the end of the first powerplay Sunrisers Hyderabad were 56/0. Mumbai Indians were missing their star bowler Jasprit Bumrah who was rested and it was showing.  Mumbai Indians were struggling to deal with these two batsmen who were on top of their game. By the end of the 10th over Sunrisers were 89/0 and were cruising towards a victory.  They reached the target of 150 in 17.3 overs.

RESULT

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the game by 10 wickets. 

Conclusion

Mumbai Indians would have been disappointed with their bowling performance.  Without Jasprit Bumrah, their bowling performance dropped to an all time low.  They did not take a single wicket.

On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderbad go into the playoffs in some style.  The form which their opening batsmen showed bodes  well for them as we come to the business end of the tournament.
